City turbocharge attacking stocks with return of Bosnian international

Melbourne City have announced the return of talented attacker Emina Ekic, signing a two-year deal with the club.

Ekic burst onto the scene last season during a six-game loan spell from NWSL side Racing Louisville FC, scoring four goals and providing an assist, before injury cut her time at City short.

The 24-year-old previously represented the USA at under-23 level in 2019, but received her first senior call-up for Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier this year and making two appearances for the national side.

Her return adds extra firepower to a City attack that’s already off to a blistering start, linking up with the likes of Holly McNamara, Hannah Wilkinson, Rhianna Pollicina and Caitlin Karic.

“My time in Melbourne was beyond enjoyable both on and off the pitch last season. The girls and staff were all very welcoming and helped me get adjusted very quickly,” Ekic said.

“Playing for City was honestly some of my favourite football in my career; not only do I think the style of play suits me perfectly, but I loved the team camaraderie.

“I’m excited to be a part of everything that Melbourne City embodies. Not only was the football great last season, but I really enjoyed how involved the club was within its community and giving back.”

Ekic is in contention to make her first appearance of the season this Sunday, when City take on Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park.

“We’re delighted to have Emina back with us for the next two years,” City coach Dario Vidosic said.

“While it was a disappointing way for her time here to end last season, she couldn’t have impressed us more with how she conducted herself both on and off the pitch.

“She will be a key part of our squad for the remainder of the season, and we can’t wait to see her back on the pitch for us very soon.”
