Melbourne City can’t make dominance count in frustrating draw with Sydney FC

Melbourne City have been forced to share the points with Sydney FC after a 0-0 draw that saw the men from Melbourne dominate everywhere except the scoreboard.

City had more possession (60%-40%), shots (23-7), shots on target (9-4), corners (9-2) and had better xG than the Sky Blues (1.96-0.49), but could not strike the decisive blow.

Samuel Souprayen had the most likely chance of the game in the 83rd minute, flashing a header wide with the goal at his mercy.

Andreas Kuen had fashioned the clearest chance a few minutes earlier, curling a volleyed effort just outside the post rather than inside.

Harrison Devenish-Meares was immense for Sydney FC, making 9 saves including a parry from an Aziz Behich effort that cannoned into his face.

A frustrating night was made worse for City when Takeshi Kanamori limped off with what appeared to be a groin injury after about 10 minutes on the park, and then compounded again when Kavian Rahmani was injured badly enough that he needed to be helped off the pitch.

The 0-0 result underlines a recent run of poor form for City; they have only one win in their last seven starts and have only five goals in that time.

City will be looking to break that trend when they play Brisbane on Tuesday, while Sydney next play at Macarthur next Saturday night.
