Newcastle Jets have secured Sydney FC midfielder Matthew Scarcella on a loan deal for the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
The 20-year-old joins the Jets after a season in which he made all six of his Isuzu UTE A-League appearances at Sydney FC to date. A deep-lying playmaker, Scarcella is the latest young player to join the Jets from the Sky Blues after 18-year-old winger Oscar Fryer’s arrival on a two-year deal.
Jets head coach Stanton, who was a former assistant at Sydney FC, pulled off one of the signings of the season ahead of the 2022-23 campaign when he lured former Sky Blue Clayton Taylor to the club where he proceeded to enjoy a breakout season in Newcastle.
Stanton says Scarcella’s arrival is important for adding depth to a playing squad that has already been impacted by multiple departures.
“Matthew is a talented young kid who will add depth to our midfield this season,” Stanton said.
“He’s a deep lying playmaker who has an eye for a pass and he will be a great asset to our squad this season.”
Scarcella added: “I’m really excited to come up here to the Jets and test myself. I want to do everything I can to help the team achieve our goals this season and I’m determined to make a strong impact here at the club.”
