Luke Brattan explains ‘no-brainer’ move: ‘That’s football’

Macarthur FC’s star recruit Luke Brattan insisted he has at the Bulls to “win things” as he explained the reason behind his Sydney FC departure.

Former Sydney captain Brattan joined Macarthur in June following five years in the Harbour City, where the 34-year-old made 119 appearances and won an Isuzu UTE A-League Premiership, Championship and Australia Cup.

Brattan has hit the ground running in Campbelltown, scoring on his competitive debut as the Bulls reached the 2024 Australia Cup Round of 16.

Looking ahead to the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season with Macarthur, he also discussed his Sydney exit.

“Long story without going too much into it, the coach (Ufuk Talay) turned around and said he couldn’t offer me a contract,” Brattan told Network 10 having scored one goal in 29 A-Leagues appearances last season.

“They want to play young boys. That’s football.

“Once I knew Sydney couldn’t offer me anything, I spoke to (head coach) Mile (Sterjovski). I’ve heard some great things about him and the club.

“It was a no-brainer really.

“It’s a fantastic club with great fans. I’ve noticed it’s very communal based. Do a lot of grassroots work.”

Macarthur – Australia Cup champions in 2022 – finished fifth in the A-Leagues last season before losing to Sydney in the Elimination Final.

They also reached the AFC Cup Zonal Finals.

“I’m still ambitious. I still want to win things,” said former Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City midfielder Brattan.

“I think I’m at a good environment and club to do that.”
