Sydney FC re-sign a Champion eager to ‘defend our title’ after injury-impacted season

Sydney FC have re-signed 2024 Championship-winner Lucy Johnson ahead of the upcoming Ninja A-League season.

The 25-year-old, who was an unused substitute in the Sky Blues 2024 Grand Final triumph over Melbourne City, joined the club from Newcastle Jets ahead of the 2023-24 season but made just five appearances through the season due to an ankle ligament injury suffered against Adelaide United in November.

Johnson returned after two-and-a-half months and made one appearance in the Finals Series against Central Coast Mariners in the Semi-FInals, before featuring in Sydney’s Grand Final squad.

Ahead of her second season in Sky Blue, Johnson hopes to make a significant contribution to the club after her injury-impacted debut campaign.

“I’m delighted to re-sign with Sydney FC for another season,” she said.

“Last year was such an incredible experience and being part of a team that won the Championship was a dream come true.

“It helped me grow a lot as a player, and I’m looking forward to building on that this season.

“My goal is to help the team defend our title and hopefully add more trophies to the cabinet.

“We have an amazing squad and coaching staff, and I can’t wait to get back out there and give my all again for the club and the fans.”

“We are extremely happy to have Lucy back for another season with Sydney FC,” said Sydney head coach Juric.

“Unfortunately, last season injury impacted her season, however with an injury-free season we expect Lucy to have a fantastic campaign on the park, as she’s a dynamic midfielder who gives us great balance and versatility in the middle of the park.

“She is an intelligent player and she has the ability to cover ground and contribute at both ends of the pitch, which will be important to how we play.”
