Western Sydney Wanderers kicked off a new era with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Perth Glory in their Isuzu UTE A-League season opener, but the Yengi’s stole the show post-match.
In a match that Bosnian import Sulejman Krpic guided the new-look Wanderers to a scrappy win at CommBank Stadium, Kusini Yengi also made his debut for Western Sydney.
Yengi has emerged as one of the A-League Men’s most exciting players, having burst onto the scene via Adelaide United.
There was a special guest in the stands to watch the 23-year-old – his father Ben.
In a wholesome interview with Paramount+, Ben Yengi could not hide his pride as he fronted the camera in Western Sydney.
“It was exciting to see him play. I always wanted to see him play on the football ground. It was a privilege to watch him today,” Ben Yengi said.
“It’s amazing. It’s the first time he’s watched me play as a professional and to get the win tops it off,” Kusini Yengi said after playing 74 minutes in his first Wanderers game.
It’s a quick visit for Ben Yengi, who will be back on the plane to Uganda on Monday.
While he prepares to return to Africa, Ben Yengi’s heart is in Australia!
“I was born in South Sudan so I’m really Sudanese by nationality but I’m also a fair dinkum Australian,” Ben joked.
Forget Halloran’s rescue effort, Goodwin laments ‘two points dropped’
Adelaide United avoided defeat thanks to a familiar face in Ben Halloran, who is back in a Reds shirt after his troubled stint in South Korea.
Halloran popped up in the 93rd minute to cancel out Ben Waine’s strike for 10-man Wellington Phoenix, securing an opening-round draw for Adelaide – last season’s semi-finalists earlier at Sky Stadium on Sunday.
But captain Craig Goodwin, who came off the bench in the second half, wasn’t happy with the result or performance.
“I see it as two points dropped. You can say we got a point from being down but they had 10 men,” Goodwin told Sky Sport NZ.
“We have to be better. We have to put teams away and punish. I think we’re a bit too hasty with our decisions and forcing it.
“We need to use the extra man when we have it.”
Goodwin was named among the substitutes following an injury-interrutped pre-season.
November’s FIFA Men’s World Cup is looming large and Goodwin was involved in Australia’s play-off success against the United Arab Emirates and Peru.
“I’m not there yet,” Goodwin said of being on the plane to Qatar 2022. “I need some good performances, so it’s good to be back on the park and get some minutes into the legs.”
