Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Liam Reddy says he won’t make a decision on his future until the end of the season.
Reddy has been outstanding between the sticks since making the switch from Brisbane late last year, conceding just eight goals in eight games and recording four clean sheets as the Phoenix booked a place in the Hyundai A-League finals series for the first time.
While he is enjoying his time in the New Zealand capital and has had some discussions with the Phoenix regarding his future, the 28-year-old shot-stopper says his sole focus at the moment is on helping to maintain Wellington’s winning run.
“At the moment I’m just concentrating on the Phoenix and at the end of the season, when we get knocked out or get to the grand final and win it hopefully, I’ll decide,” he said.
Reddy puts his smooth transition down to a strong team culture at Wellington, plus some impressive performances from skipper Andrew Durante and Jon McKain in the heart of the Phoenix defence.
Since the Australian’s arrival the Phoenix have won five matches, lost two and drawn one – a run that has lifted them to fourth on the ladder.
“My job has been made a lot easier by the 10 blokes in front of me, especially Andrew Durante and Jon McKain who have been playing outstanding,” Reddy said.
“I think we work as a team. We score goals and concede goals as a team so it’s been a good team to come into.”
With a playoff place already secured, the attention is turned to the final match of the regular season against Central Coast on Friday.
A win will see the Phoenix remain fourth and guarantee a home semi-final at their Westpac Stadium fortress where they haven’t lost since October 2008.
Yet for all that, Reddy admits that the New Zealand-based side still does not get the recognition from across the Tasman it probably deserves.
“You don’t realise until you get here but we’re probably not taken that seriously over in Australia,” he said.
“Hopefully we can win this week and go into the semi-finals and be very confident off three wins and make some people stand up and have a look at us.”
