Young forward Callum McCowatt believes Sarpreet Singh’s pending transfer from Wellington Phoenix to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich is a superb outcome for New Zealand football.
McCowatt, 20, signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix on Wednesday morning as his New Zealand teammate Singh’s dream move to the German giants edges closer.
Singh – who is currently in Germany touring Bayern’s facilities – starred alongside McCowatt for the All Whites at the recent U20 World Cup in Poland.

The pair also played together at the U17 World Cup in Chile in 2015, and are widely regarded as being among New Zealand football’s brightest talents.
“I’m really happy for him. Bayern are one of the best clubs in the world,” McCowatt told Radio Sport NZ on Wednesday.
That’s a positive for the country.
“It’s good for all the young players around the country seeing that it’s possible to get a move to these big European clubs, the pinnacle of football around the world.
“I hope the deal gets done, I’m stoked for him.”
Attacking midfielder McCowatt has been garnering significant attention with his performances for Auckland City and Eastern Suburbs in the New Zealand Premiership over the last two seasons.
In August 2018, he had a three-month trial with Dutch outfit Sparta Rotterdam.
Although the young Kiwi admits his focus is now on getting some senior men’s football under his belt in the Hyundai A-League, he still holds serious ambitions of returning to Europe.
“Football is biggest in Europe, and that’s where I want to be eventually. It’s the ultimate end goal,” he said.
“But I’m focusing on Wellington now. Playing minutes is what I need for my career right now and I want to work my way into the starting team.”
