Wellington Phoenix have launched their new home and away playing strips ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 season.
Both kit designs deliver a clean and modern update from their predecessors, but with the incorporation of the club’s new logo continue to celebrate a uniquely Wellingtonian design.
The home jersey features strong, bold black and yellow stripes, the iconic colours of Wellington. Also, located near the heart of each player is the new team logo – with its traditional depiction of the spirit of the taniwha, or Phoenix, from a Māori legend that is anchored in the creation story of Wellington harbour.
The away jersey takes a completely different approach with a clean, white look featuring a slice of home with a subtle swirl on the chest symbolising the iconic Wellington winds.
A collaborative venture between the Wellington Phoenix and adidas sees a refined fit of the jersey to enable maximum movement and comfort for players. The inclusion of the moisture wicking innovation of adidas Climalite technology ensures players remain cool and dry even in the toughest climates.
For Phoenix General Manager David Dome the strength of the jersey is in its subtle variations and improvements on previous strips.
“The black and yellow vertical stripes have been an iconic part of our home strip since 09/10, chatting to local Iwi as part of our design of the new logo though it was impressed upon us the importance of balance – the interplay of light and darkness.”
“We think this strip has terrific balance, but also – it just looks clean. We’re delighted with the work from adidas in incorporating some of our design requests, but also in driving new innovations that we reckon the players will really enjoy wearing.”
