Can City win the treble? The Greatest Ever? | Dub Zone Ep.19

Melbourne Victory captain Kayla Morrison has signed a two-year contract extension in a deal set to run to the end of the 2026-27 Ninja A-League season.

The American-born defender joined the club ahead of the 2020-21 season and was named captain for the following campaign; having become an Australian citizen in 2022, Morrison has made a happy home for herself in Melbourne and is “beyond excited” to remain with Victory for another two seasons.

“It’s an absolute honor to continue to be a part of this incredible club,” Morrison said.

“I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished together and immensely grateful for the support, opportunities, and belief the club has shown me.”

Morrison has made 77 league appearances for Victory since her debut in January, 2021. The centre-back won the Ninja A-League Championship in her first season at the club but watched on from the sidelines as her side went back-to-back in the following campaign, after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in Round 1 of the 2021-22 season.

Morrison lifts the Championship trophy aloft after a 1-0 win over Sydney FC in the 2021 Ninja A-League Grand Final.

Melbourne Victory director of football John Didulica highlighted Morrison’s return from the ACL tear as one of Morrison’s several inspiring actions throughout her time as club captain.

“Kayla is an important figure across our entire club and we are privileged to secure her for a  further two years,” Didulica said.

“Everyone at Melbourne Victory was inspired by her effort and the sacrifices Kayla made when she returned from a ruptured ACL to go on to play every single minute of the following season.

“Her leadership through action has been exemplary. She sets the standards not only across our (Ninja A-League) team but across our entire club as to what it means to be elite and to have a winning mentality.

“I have no doubt she is among the very best players in the A-League Women’s competition and to secure her to a long-term deal demonstrates our commitment to building an A-League Women’s team capable of winning trophies year on year.”

Morrison and Victory are next in action this weekend in an A-Leagues double-header against Adelaide at AAMI Park.
