Macarthur sign experienced South Korea international with impressive football CV

Macarthur Bulls have significantly strengthened their attacking stocks for the Isuzu UTE A-League 2025-26, signing South Korea international Ji Dong-won on a one-year deal.

The 34-year-old South Korea international joins the Bulls from K League 1 outfit Suwon FC; Ji has made more than 100 appearances in Korean club football through stints at Suwon, FC Seoul and Jeonnam Dragons – where his career began in 2010.

A transfer from Jeonnam to Sunderland saw Ji spend two seasons at the Premier League club – a stint highlighted by a memorable 93rd-minute match-winner scored against Manchester City in January 2012.

A 55-cap South Korea international who helped his nation win bronze at the 2012 London Olympic Games, Ji’s impressive international career played out alongside an interesting club career that took him from England and the Premier League to Germany, where he spent eight years plying his trade across the top two Bundesliga tiers.

Ji spent a brief spell at Borussia Dortmund in between six-and-a-half seasons at Augsburg, before loans to Darmstadt 98 and Eintracht Braunschweig, a permanent move to Mainz 05, and his eventual return to Korea with FC Seoul in 2021.

Four years later, Ji is set for a new challenge at Macarthur, where he’ll join fellow forwards Harry Sawyer and Chris Ikonomidis as a key figure in head coach Mile Sterjovski’s attacking unit.

The veteran South Korea international expects his European experience to be of benefit to his first season in Australia.

“I want to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to play here, I’m excited to play with the team,” he said.

“I love Australia, it has a good lifestyle and good football with strong young players. This is a good last challenge for my career.”

“I have played in Europe so I will bring my experience to help the young players in this team.”
