A disappointed Andrew Durante says Wellington Phoenix ‘got what they deserved’ in Saturday night’s drubbing against the Jets in Newcastle.
Speaking after his side was beaten 3-0 at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night, Durante lamented his side’s sloppy errors which cost them dearly.
The defeat means Darije Kalezic’s side is still searching for their first win of the campaign after five rounds.
“We were own worst enemy tonight,” a shattered Durante told Fox Sports.
“We were giving the ball away in silly areas, we were inviting pressure our passes were sloppy and we got what we deserved.
“I don’t think confidence is an issue, [but] there’s a few things to work on,” the skipper added.
“Our shape is a little bit off, we work on it quite a bit at training so come match day there is something that goes wrong. We need to address that.”
While the result doesn’t sit well with Durante, he was just delighted to be back on the pitch.
The veteran defender was expected to be out until the New Year after coming off inured against Sydney FC in Round 2.
But he made a speedy recovery and will now head into camp with New Zealand ahead of their FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-off against Peru.
“I felt good. I got through 90 minutes after I was meant to be out until the middle of January, so it’s not too bad,” the All Whites defender said.
“I’ve got a big international next week so I’m glad I got through unscathed.”
Phoenix have the chance to get their first win of the campaign next weekend when they host Perth Glory at Westpac Stadium on Sunday.
