WESTERN UNITED v MELBOURNE CITY

Friday, October 7. AAMI Park.

WESTERN UNITED

Extended squad: 1. Jamie YOUNG (gk), 4. Leo LACROIX, 5. Dylan PIERIAS, 6. Tomoki IMAI, 7. Tongo DOUMBIA, 8. Lachlan WALES, 9. Dylan WENZEL-HALLS, 10. Steven LUSTICA, 11. Connor PAIN, 14. James TROISI, 17. Ben GARUCCIO, 19. Joshua RISDON (c), 21. Sebastian PASQUALI, 26. Nicolas MILANOVIC, 27. Jacob TRATT, 37. Ryan SCOTT (gk), 38. Noah BOTIC, 44. Nikolai TOPOR-STANLEY, 88. Neil KILKENNY, 99. Aleksandar PRIJOVIC.

Unavailable: Adisu BAYEW (injured)

Analysis: The big guns are all back on board as Western begin their championship defence. New signing James Troisi is included in the extended squad, along with all 11 of John Aloisi’s starters from last season’s Grand Final. Nikolai Topor-Stanley is back amongst it after missing the finals, whilst Alessandro Diamanti remains a notable absentee from the squad as he continues his return to full fitness.

Fantasy tip: Aleksandar Prijović (FWD – $367k) to continue his sublime finals form in Round 1. He scored once in last season’s Grand Final (and insists City’s own goal should have been credited to him as well) to clinch the Joe Marston Medal in a 2-0 win.

MELBOURNE CITY

Extended squad: 1. Tom GLOVER (GK), 2. Scott GALLOWAY, 3. Scott JAMIESON (C), 4. Nuno REIS, 6.Thomas LAM, 7. Mathew LECKIE, 8. Richard VAN DER VENNE, 9. Jamie MACLAREN, 10. Florin BERENGUER, 13. Aiden O’NEILL, 14. Valon BERISHA, 15. Andrew NABBOUT, 16. Taras GOMULKA, 18. Jordon HALL, 22. Curtis GOOD, 23. Marco TILIO, 25. Callum TALBOT, 33. Matthew SUTTON (GK), 37. Max CAPUTO, 38. Jordan BOS.

Analysis: Richard van der Venne, Thomas Lam, Callum Talbot and Valon Berisha are all included in the City squad, and will be eager to make their respective league debuts for the club. Connor Metcalfe’s off-season departure leaves a gap in midfield head coach Patrick Kisnorbo will be eager to fill. In attack, Marco Tilio’s pursuit of a starting spot will continue.

Fantasy tip: Western managed to throw a blanket over City’s star-studded attack in last season’s Grand Final. Should the same occur in the season-opener, opting for a tried and tested City defender in your squad may be a safer fantasy bet. Captain Scott Jamieson (DEF – $284K) gets forward from defence and takes his fair share of set pieces.

CENTRAL COAST MARINERS v NEWCASTLE JETS

Saturday, October 8. Central Coast Stadium.

CENTRAL COAST

Extended squad: 2. Thomas AQUILINA, 3. Brian KALTAK, 4. Joshua NISBET, 6. Maximilien BALARD, 7. Samuel SILVERA, 9. Jason CUMMINGS, 11. Beni NKOLOLO, 13. Harrison STEELE, 14. Garang KUOL, 15. Storm ROUX, 17. KELECHI, 18. Jacob FARRELL, 20. Daniel VUKOVIC (c)(gk), 21. Michael RUHS, 22. Cameron WINDUST, 24. Yaren SOZER (gk), 25. Nectarios TRIANTIS, 29. Dor JOK, 90. Paul AYONGO, 98. MARCO TULIO

Unavailable: 10. Matheus MORESCHE (injured), 23. Daniel HALL (suspended), 26. Bradley TAPP (injured)

Analysis: Garang Kuol is included in Central Coast’s extended squad after signing with Premier League club Newcastle United in the off-season. Agreeing to join the club in January, Kuol is back on home soil ahead of the World Cup – Mariners fans, catch him while you can.

Fantasy tip: Jason Cummings (FWD – $386K) to hit the ground running. The newly-capped Socceroo intends to gun for the Golden Boot this season and would love nothing better than to get off the mark early against the Jets.

NEWCASTLE JETS

Extended squad: Jack DUNCAN (FK), 2. Dane INGHAM, 3. Jason HOFFMAN, 4. Jordan ELSEY, 5. Matthew JURMAN (co-captain), 6. Brandon O’NEILL (co-captain), 7. Trent BUHAGIAR, 8. Beka DARTSMELIA, 9. Beka MIKELTADZE, 10. Reno PISCOPO, 11. Jaushua SOTIRIO, 14. Mohamed AL-TAAY, 17. Kosta GROZOS, 18. Daniel STYNES, 19. Callum TIMMINS, 20. Michael WEIER (gk), 23. Rory JORDAN, 24. James McGARRY, 25. Carl JENKINSON (co-captain), 26. Archie GOODWIN, 30. Noah JAMES (gk), 32. Angus THURGATE, 33. Mark NATTA.

Analysis: It’s a new-look Jets outfit heading into season 2022-23 – starting with two of the club’s three co-captains (Brandon O’Neill and Carl Jenkinson) who are both named in Arthur Papas’ extended squad for Round 1. Reno Piscopo, Jaushua Sotirio, Beka Dartsmelia, Callum Timmins, Daniel Stynes, James McGarry and Mark Natta are all available and putting their hand up to debut against the Mariners.

Fantasy tip: Reno Piscopo (MID – $263K) to shoulder creative burden. In the absence of the departed Daniel Penha, the pressure is on for the 24-year-old to produce a consistent body of work for Arthur Papas’ side this season. If Piscopo is at his best, you’ll be sorry he’s not in your fantasy team.

BRISBANE ROAR V MACARTHUR FC

Saturday, October 8. Suncorp Stadium.

BRISBANE ROAR

Extended squad: 1.Macklin FREKE (GK), 2.Scott NEVILLE, 3.Jordan COURTNEY-PERKINS, 5.Thomas ALDRED, 6.Connor CHAPMAN, 7.Rahmat AKBARI, 8.Riku DANZAKI, 9.Charles AUSTIN, 10.Nikola MILEUSNIC, 13.Henry HORE, 15.Jesse DALEY, 16.Joshua BRINDELL-SOUTH, 17.Carlo ARMIENTO, 19.Jack HINGERT, 23.Jordan HOLMES (GK), 26.James O’SHEA, 27.Kai TREWIN, 28.Joseph KNOWLES, 29.Cyrus DEHMIE, 35.Louis ZABALA (two to be omitted).

Unavailable: 4.Anton MLINARIC.

Analysis: New signings Jordan Courtney-Perkins, Carlo Armiento, Riku Danzaki and Charlie Austin all make Warren Moon’s Round 1 squad as the Roar look to bounce back up the A-League Men table.

Fantasy tip: Who else but Austin? The Englishman’s A-League Men debut comes at Suncorp Stadium after a long pre-season Down Under. The stage is set for Austin (FWD – $329K) to star – can the experienced marksman produce?

MACARTHUR FC

Extended squad: Filip KURTO (GK), Jake McGING, Tomi USKOK, Jonathan ASPROPOTAMITIS, Ivan VUJICA, Kearyn BACCUS, Daniel DE SILVA, Ulises DAVILA, Daniel ARZANI, Lachlan ROSE, Al Hassan TOURE, Nick SUMAN (gk), Matt MILLAR, Charles M’MOMBWA, Jake HOLLMAN, Anthony CARTER, Jed DREW, Craig NOONE, Jerry SKOTADIS.

Unavailable: Mario WILLIAMS, Aleks ŠUŠNJAR.

Analysis: Experienced defender Aleksandar Šušnjar and Barbados international Mario Williams are unavailable for Dwight Yorke’s first league fixture at the helm for the Bulls. New signings Anthony Carter, Jerry Skotadis, Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Ivan Vujica, Matt Millar and Daniel Arzani will all be a chance to make their debut after arriving in the off-season.

Fantasy tip: Al Hassan Toure (FWD – $165K) to carry on Australia Cup form. Buoyed by a cup final goal which helped seal a first piece of silverware for both the club and head coach Dwight Yorke, Toure stands to benefit from Yorke’s guidance this season. Can the Manchester United legend help Toure put up career-best numbers this season?

SYDNEY FC V MELBOURNE VICTORY

Saturday, October 8. Allianz Stadium.

SYDNEY FC

Extended squad: 1. Andrew REDMAYNE (GK), 2. James DONACHIE, 4.Alex WILKINSON (c), 5. Connor O’TOOLE, 6. Jack RODWELL, 8. Paulo RETRE, 9. Adam LE FONDRE, 10. Joe LOLLEY, 11. Robert MAK, 12. Pat WOOD, 16. Patrick YAZBEK, 17. Anthony CACERES, 18. Diego CABALLO, 19. Adrian SEGECIC, 20. Thomas HEWARD-BELLE (GK), 21. Alex PARSONS, 22. Max BURGESS, 23. Rhyan GRANT, 26. Luke BRATTAN, 29. Aaron GURD.

Analysis: Sky Blues fans, rejoice: Luke Brattan is named amongst Steve Corica’s extended squad for Saturday night’s Big Blue, nine months on from tearing his Anterior Cruciate Ligament. It will be a tentative return to action for the midfielder, who last appeared for Sydney FC in the 2020-21 Grand Final, in which he was sent off in the first half against Melbourne City. This occasion looms as a special one for Brattan, as well as the new-look Sky Blues brimming with new signings and eager to make a statement in the club’s first game at the brand-new Allianz Stadium.

Fantasy tip: Robert Mak (FWD – $291K) to mark his Sydney FC debut with a goal. The Slovakian international will be eager to introduce himself to The Cove, and there’s no better way to do so than with a Big Blue strike.

MELBOURNE VICTORY

Extended squad: 1.Matt ACTON, 3.Enrique LOPEZ (CADETE), 4.Rai MARCHAN, 5.Matthew SPIRANOVIC, 6.Leigh BROXHAM, 7.Chris IKONOMIDIS, 8.Josh BRILLANTE, 11.Ben FOLAMI, 14.Jay BARNETT, 15.Geroge TIMOTHEOU, 16.Stefan NIGRO, 17.Luis NANI, 18.Nick D’AGOSTINO, 20.Paul IZZO, 21.Roderick MIRANDA, 22.Jake BRIMMER, 23.Nathan KONSTANDOPOULOS, 24.Nishan VELUPILLAY, 25.Noah SMITH, 26.Lleyton BROOKS, 28.Will WILSON, 29.Eli ADAMS

Analysis: Luis Nani is primed to make his A-League Men debut for Melbourne Victory in Round 1. He joins a star-studded Victory attack, with Nick D’Agostino, Chris Ikonomidis, Ben Folami and Jake Brimmer all pushing for selection. Ivan Kelava is no longer in goal for Tony Popovic’s side; Paul Izzo is included in the extended squad and eager to make the No.1 spot his own.

Fantasy tip: All eyes on Nani – but don’t discount a piece of Brimmer brilliance. The attacking midfielder (MID – $490K) and reigning Johnny Warren Medallist simply cannot be ignored as a fantasy asset after an incredible individual campaign in 2021-22, which featured many big goals in big games.

WELLINGTON PHOENIX V ADELAIDE UNITED

Sunday, October 9. Sky Stadium.

WELLINGTON PHOENIX

Extended squad: 3. Finn SURMAN, 4. Scott WOOTTON, 5. Steven UGARKOVIC, 6. Tim PAYNE, 7. Kosta BARBAROUSES, 8. Ben OLD, 9. Oskar ZAWADA, 11. Bozhidar KRAEV, 12. Lucas MAURAGIS, 13. Nicholas PENNINGTON, 17. Callan ELLIOT, 18. Ben WAINE, 19. Sam SUTTON, 20. Oli SAIL (gk), 21. Joshua LAWS, 23. Clayton LEWIS, 24. Oskar VAN HATTUM, 31. Yan SASSE, 40. Alex PAULSEN (gk)

Unavailable: 10. David Ball (injured), 14. Alex RUFER (injured)

Analysis: David Ball and Alex Rufer miss Wellington’s Round 1 clash with Adelaide through injury – but expect Ufuk Talay to roll out a revamped attack with new signings Kosta Barbarouses, Bozhidar Kraev and Oskar Zawada all fit and pushing for selection.

Fantasy tip: Kraev (MID – $234K) to trouble the Reds as a relative unknown arriving in his prime. The Bulgaria international is full of confidence ahead of his A-League Men debut, arriving at the age of 25 who describes himself as ” a natural No.10, very creative” who “plays on the edge of risk.”

ADELAIDE UNITED

Extended squad: 1.James DELIANOV (gk), 2.Harry VAN DER SAAG, 3.Ben WARLAND, 6.Louis D’ARRIGO, 7.Ryan KITTO, 8.ISAÍAS, 10.Zach CLOUGH, 11.Craig GOODWIN (c), 13.Lachlan BARR, 14.George BLACKWOOD, 21.Javi LÓPEZ, 26.Ben HALLORAN, 28.JUANDE, 35.Luka JOVANOVIĆ, 36.Panashe MADANHA, 41.Alexandar POPOVIĆ, 46.Joe GAUCI (gk), 47.Asad KASUMOVIĆ, 49.Musa TOURE, 55.Ethan ALAGICH

Unavailable: 4.Nicholas ANSELL (hamstring), 9.Hiroshi IBUSUKI (suspension), 27.Joshua CAVALLO (illness), 31.BERNARDO (foot), 37.Jonny YULL (back)

Analysis: Following in the footsteps of Toure brothers Al Hassan and Mohamed comes Musa Toure, born in 2005, who travels in Carl Veart’s Adelaide squad to face the ‘Nix. Craig Goodwin and Ben Halloran are both included in the travelling party, but Hiroshi Ibusuki’s suspension leaves a gap at No.9 for Veart to fill in Round 1. Bernardo Oliveira, Jonny Yull and Nick Answell all miss out due to injury, with Josh Cavallo missing through illness.

Fantasy tip: Craig Goodwin is the most expensive fantasy player this season – but could Ben Halloran (FWD – $318K) offer similar attacking output off the right wing for a cut price?

WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS V PERTH GLORY

Sunday, October 9. CommBank Stadium.

WESTERN SYDNEY

Extended squad: 1.Daniel MARGUSH (GK), 2.Gabriel CLEUR, 3.Adama TRAORE, 5.Tomi MRCELA, 6.Marcelo GUEDES (GK), 7.Ramy NAJJARINE, 8.Oliver BOZANIC, 9.Kusini YENGI, 10.Milos NINKOVIC, 11.Sulejman KRPIC, 12.Ruon TONGYIK, 17.Romain AMALFITANO, 19.Daniel WILMERING, 20.Lawrence THOMAS (GK), 21.Jarrod CARLUCCIO, 23.Yeni NGBAKOTO, 26.Brandon BORRELLO, 28.Calem NIEUWENHOF, 35.Zac SAPSFORD, 36.Alessandro LOPANE.

Analysis: Everywhere you look there are new names in Mark Rudan’s Western Sydney squad. Of 16 news signings, 13 are available for action, with Aidan Simmons, Nathaneal Blair and Tom Beadling missing out.

Fantasy tip: Kusini Yengi (FWD – $165K) to celebrate Wanderers debut in style. It’s been far too long since we’ve seen the big No.9 celebrate an A-Leagues goal – and the smooth mover will be eager to get off the mark in his new colours against last season’s wooden spooners.

PERTH GLORY

Extended squad: 33.Liam REDDY (gk), 2.John KOUTROUMBIS, 5.Mark BEEVERS, 6.Aaron MCENEFF, 7.Ryan WILLIAMS, 8.Mustafa AMINI, 9.Bruno FORNAROLI, 10.Salim KHELIFI, 11.Ben AZUBEL, 12.Luke IVANOVIC, 14.Jack CLISBY, 16.Keegan JELACIC, 19.Zach DUNCAN, 20.Giordano COLLI, 23.Mitch OXBORROW, 25.Matt HATCH, 29.Darryl LACHMAN, 30.Pierce CLARK (gk), 37.Jacob MUIR, 77.Stefan COLAKOVSKI.

Unavailable: 1.Brad JONES (gk) (injured), 13.Cameron COOK (gk) (injured), 21.Anthony BURKE-GILROY (injured), 22.Adrian SARDINERO (injured)

Analysis: Mustafa Amini will captain the club into a new campaign in 2022-23, after arriving from Sydney FC in the off-season. Amini is joined by a number of fellow newcomers ready to debut for Ruben Zadkovich’s side, including John Koutroumbis, Mark Beevers, Aaron McEneff, Ryan Williams, Salim Khelifi, Ben Azubel, Luke Ivanovic, Keegan Jelacic, Zach Duncan and Stefan Colakovski.

Fantasy tip: With so many new faces coming through the doors, “El Tuna” remains your safest fantasy bet. Bruno Fornaroli (FWD – $317K) managed eight goals from 16 appearances in a lacklustre Glory outfit last season, and remains Perth’s most dangerous attacking asset on paper heading into the new campaign.
