Commentator’s Call

Robbie Thomson

“It’s really interesting that the Sydney FC board have opted for stability after last season’s disappointments, extending Steve Corica’s contract. I think Corica will enjoy the challenge of embedding a new system, with new players he has recruited specifically for that system.

“Chief among those are Robert Mak and Joe Lolley from Europe, but Jack Rodwell is a huge signing for them too – and the return from injury of Luke Brattan is like a new signing.

Add in the new stadium factor, and if this can all come together then they’re easily a top-four side.”

Ex-player’s view

Alex Brosque

“After the disappointment of last season, and all the changes in the off-season, Sydney need a fast start.

“In those seven weeks or so before the World Cup break, Steve Corica needs to give the fans hard evidence that his rebuild has taken root, and that Sydney will be back up challenging for the title.

With the experienced spine they have, the return from long-term injury of Luke Brattan and the obvious quality of their visa signings, I think Sydney will be ready to go from round 1 – and will also build as the season goes on.
