Independent Match Review Panel confirms three suspensions after Round 1 red cards: Details

Isuzu UTE Goal of the Week Nominations | Round 1 | 2024-25

Melbourne City midfielder James Jeggo has been suspended for two Isuzu UTE A-League matches by Football Australia’s independent Match Review Panel (MRP), after receiving a red card in his side’s 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets in Round 1 of the 2024-25 season.

The Socceroo’s send-off was one of three Round 1 red cards; Melbourne Victory captain Roderick Miranda and Sydney FC’s Max Burgess were also dismissed in their respective Round 1 fixtures and, after the MRP convened on Monday afternoon, both Miranda and Burgess were handed one-game suspensions.

Burgess and Miranda will be available for selection in Round 3. Jeggo, meanwhile, has until 2pm AEDT on Tuesday, October 22 to advise Football Australia whether he wishes to refer the matter to the independent Disciplinary and Ethics Committee in the hope of seeing his two-game suspension reduced.

The MRP, consisting of Simon Micallef (Chair), Alan Davidson and Con Diomis, determined Jeggo had committed “Assault on a player (e.g. violent conduct when not challenging for the ball) or against any other person other than a Match Official, including an attempt to Assault” when he tangled with Jets youngster Eli Adams in City’s road trip to Newcastle in Round 1.

Jeggo is currently set to miss Saturday’s Melbourne Derby against Melbourne Victory, as well as City’s away trip to face Western United on Monday, November 4.

The MRP also determined both Miranda and Burgess had committed “Serious Foul play (e.g. when challenging for the ball)” with their respective red card offences.

Like Jeggo, Miranda will miss Saturday’s Melbourne Derby through suspension.

Burgess, meanwhile, will be ineligible for Sydney’s trip to face Auckland FC in Round 2 after his challenge on Ben Holliday in Saturday night’s Sydney Derby earned a straight red card from referee Alex King.

The Sky Blues substitute had come off the bench just four minutes prior to the tackle that led to his send-off and subsequent suspension for Round 2.
