JETS SOAR PAST VICTORY
Newcastle Jets remain on course for their second ever Finals Series appearance following a confident 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory at a wet AAMI Park on Friday.
Hannah Brewer’s first Westfield W-League goal put the seal on a fifth win in eight matches that momentarily sends Newcastle into first.
Tori Huster and Katie Stengel earlier scored either side of Kyra Cooney-Cross’ maiden top-flight goal to give the visitors a half-time lead and they were rarely troubled from there, ensuring Victory remain five points off the top four.
SKY BLUES LEAVE IT LATE AGAINST REDS
Caitlin Foord came off the bench to score a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Sydney FC snatched a 2-1 win over Adelaide United at Marden Sports Complex on Friday night.
Foord struck to deep into stoppage time to deny Adelaide what would have been a hard-earned point, instead extending the Sky Blues’ winning run to five matches.
Kylie Ledbrook earlier opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half, before Alex Chidiac restored parity for the Reds.
It looked set to stay that way until Foord’s late intervention, with the Westfield Matildas star ensuring her side remain safely inside the top four.
ROAR STUN GLORY IN THE WEST
Brisbane Roar broke two points clear atop the Westfield W-League ladder with a valuable 2-0 win over title rivals Perth Glory at Dorrien Gardens on Friday.
Hayley Raso and Allira Toby both scored in the space of seven second half minutes to cement Roar’s place as premiership favourites.
Glory, without absent superstar Sam Kerr for family reasons, lacked their usual firepower and were held scoreless for the first time this season.
FISHLOCK RESCUES CITY AGAINST WANDERERS
Jess Fishlock spared Melbourne City with a 92nd-minute winner in a much-needed 1-0 victory over a brave Western Sydney Wanderers at ANZ Stadium on New Year’s Day.
Just as it seemed the champions would be frustrated in their attempts to close in on the top four, star midfielder Fishlock tucked home Kyah Simon’s stoppage-time pass to seal a vital three points.
England star Jodie Taylor earlier made her debut from the bench as the visitors moved level on points with fourth-placed Perth Glory in Steph Catley’s 100th Westfield W-League appearance.
