Hyundai A-League’s newest foes ignite

Mark this down: Saturday night February 11, AAMI Park.

That’s when Roar are back in the Victorian capital to face City. Who knows, they could even face each other in the Finals Series next year?

What we do know is that after a week of coaches hurling barbs in the media, and some genuine spite on the pitch in last Saturday night’s 1-1 draw, this is the real deal when it comes to acrimony between two clubs.

Jets’ initiative a win for all fans

On a much friendlier note, how good was it to see the Jets recognise their mature age fans on Sunday? The club arranged for some of their fans to be mascots for the day, walking out with the players. Barbara Kynaston, a loyal Newcastle fan and a sprightly 81-years young, one of those fans honoured in this way. The Jets should be applauded for this tribute to fans of all ages.

How good is Luke DeVere?

Could he be back in Caltex Socceroo contention? What a job he did on Bruno Fornaroli this week.

It wasn’t that long ago that DeVere started for his nation against Germany in that 2-2 draw in March, 2015. Australia’s next matches in March, 2017 are crucial World Cup qualifiers.

A-League fans pay their respects #ForcaChape

Hats off to the Wanderers fans for this Tifo on Saturday. It was emblematic of the respect for the Chapecoense players, staff and journos who lost their lives last week. Across the league starting from the Westfield FFA Cup on Wednesday, the Hyundai A-League joined a global outpouring – including one referee in Holland who refused to book a player for taking his shirt off to reveal his support for the Brazilian club – of emotion and respect for lives lost after the tragedy.
