Adelaide-s imported talent showed their wares as the Reds bared their teeth against a Wanderers side who were intent on chalking up their first ever win in the Hyundai A-League. It wasn-t to be though.
Jeronimo Neumann made up for his earlier poor penalty, which was saved by Ante Covic by finishing off a delightful move that was started by a rampant Iain Ramsay, the Reds winning their first two matches of the season for the first time in their history.
For the Wanderers it was a case of a better attacking performance than their opening display and they could have snatched another draw if Labinot Haliti had of been on target, Aaron Mooy and Shinji Ono both looked very good in their first full outing together.
Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets
Marquee men Alessandro Del Piero and Emile Heskey both got on the scoresheet as Newcastle edged out Sydney FC 3-2 in a pulsating Hyundai A-League clash at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.
In front of a record regular-season Sydney crowd of 35,419, the international stars both showed their class with impressive goals but it was the Jets who held on for a crucial victory.
After Ryan Griffiths gave the Jets an early lead, Del Piero gave the home fans what they wanted and started repaying his $2 million-a-season price tag with a scorching free kick from 25 yards
Brisbane Roar v Melbourne Victory
The Roar made it an awful return for former coach Ange Postecoglou, smashing an out of sorts Victory side 5-0 at Suncorp Stadium.
The Victory were never in the hunt throughout the match and it could have been 15 instead of five goals had the Roar taken all their chances and not had two goals disallowed for offside, the result sending the rest of the competition a strong warning.
Melbourne Heart v Wellington Phoenix
The young Nix escaped with a draw thanks to a shock move from Heart veteran Simon Colosimo who denied them a goal by handling the ball on the goal line.
The move resulted in Heart not being able to continue to attack as they would have liked and after Paul Ifill stepped up to slot the penalty it was the young Phoenix who had the better of the game, but never really troubled Clint Bolton.
At the other end Michael Boxall and Andrew Durante were superb in defence while one-match keeper Jacob Spoonley delivered a superb performance in goal.
Central Coast Mariners v Perth Glory
It was always going to be a tight match with two of the best defences in the A-League involved and while the match may not have been pretty, it was a fiery encounter.
Patrick Zwaanswijk and Dean Heffernan had words early and the trend continued with good friends Jacob Burns and Mile Sterjovski exchanging elbows at one point.
With all defenders on display in the thick of it, it was Trent Sainsbury who stood the tallest, delivering a masterful performance alongside Zwaanswijk and teeing up Daniel McBreen for the lone goal of the match and setting up a Mariners victory.
