Hyundai A-League milestone: Brosque’s double celebration

Sydney FC skipper Alex Brosque is set to make his 200th Hyundai A-League appearance when Sydney FC host Newcastle Jets on Saturday.

And it’s not the only milestone mark the former Caltex Socceroo will be celebrating in the top-of-the-table clash.

DOUBLE CENTURY

As he leads the Sky Blues against the Jets this weekend, Brosque will become the 24th player to reach 200 Hyundai A-League games.

The 34-year-old was a foundation player at the then-Queensland Roar in the competition’s inaugural season, featuring 21 times and sharing the Golden Boot with eight goals.

He made the switch to Sydney in 2006/07 in what was his first stint at the club, racking up over 100 appearances in four seasons before spending time in Japan and the UAE.

CLUB RECORD

Brosque was named captain on his return in 2014 and has gone on to solidify his place as a Sydney legend, eventually leading the Sky Blues to their third championship last season.

The 21-time Australia international will only enhance his reputation when he overtakes former midfielder Terry McFlynn as the club’s all-time leading appearance maker at Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

Brosque will pull on the Sky Blue jersey for the 179th time in the top-flight, surpassing McFlynn’s previous high mark.

The attacker has also captained his side on 74 occasions, more than any other player in the club’s history.

And there is every chance he could cap the celebrations with a goal, having scored an impressive 13 times in 26 games against the Jets.
