Hyundai A-League classic clashes: seven-goal stunner in Newcastle

With Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC set to face off in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday night, we reflect on a crazy encounter from 2014/15.

In his first season in charge, Graham Arnold’s side remained in the hunt to finish first when they travelled to the Hunter for the penultimate round.

Phil Stubbins, conversely, was hoping to avoid the wooden spoon in his maiden campaign and saw his side take a 1-0 lead through Enver Alivodic’s classy scooped finish.

The real drama was to come after half-time.

Alex Brosque pulled his side level immediately after the restart, before the Sky Blues broke the game open with a further two goals in the space of four minutes.

Bernie Ibini poked home to make it 2-1 before Brosque popped up again as the visitors seemingly seized control.

But the Jets refused to roll over.

Edson Montano reduced the deficit with less than half an hour remaining and the Jets’ comeback appeared set to be rewarded when Andrew Hoole – who was snapped up by Sydney at the end of the season – converted his first Hyundai A-League goal from the penalty spot.

Just when the drama appeared to be over, Robert Stambolziev volleyed in his one and only Hyundai A-League goal as the home fans’ joy quickly turned to despair.

And Newcastle’s attempts to restore parity came up short as Sydney hung for an epic 4-3 victory.
