THE Matildas sail into uncharted waters on Monday night, facing off with Sweden in Australia’s first ever Semi Final fixture at an Olympic Football Tournament at Nissan Stadium.
Tony Gustavsson’s side progressed to the final four after a mesmeric 4-3 win over Great Britain in the Quarter Finals of the Women’s Football Tournament at Tokyo 2020.
2020/21 W-League Goalkeeper of the Year Teagan Micah produced a crucial penalty save in the first half of additional extra time with the tense Quarter Final clash locked at two goals apiece, inviting Mary Fowler and Sam Kerr to net Australia’s third and fourth goals of the game to put the result beyond doubt.

The incredible result made history for the Matildas, who will look to go one step further on Monday night when meeting Sweden at Nissan Stadium. The two nations faced off in the group stage of the tournament, with Sweden emerging 4-2 victors on the night. But Gustavsson’s side have impressed in the games that followed, drawing 0-0 with world number one United States before toppling Great Britain on July 30.
The Matildas begin a new month on a wave of newly-found confidence, driven forward by the eagerness to enact revenge on Sweden for the deflating group stage result.
