Holly Furphy’s outstanding midfield performance has inspired Melbourne Victory back to the top of the Ninja A-League table with a 3-1 win over Newcastle at No2. Sportsground.
Furphy was in everything for the Victory, having a hand in all three goals including a direct assistant for Rhianna Pollicina’s brilliant 57th minute volley.
Furphy had earlier won the free kick that saw Kennedy White head home completely unmarked from Alana Jancevksi’s pinpoint delivery in the 25th minute, the American’s sixth goal of the season putting her clear at the top of the Golden Boot standings.
The Victory number 9 was also involved in the initial build up that led to Nicki Flannery’s 77th minute double effort goal that put the result beyond doubt.
Newcastle allowed themselves some consolation in the 82nd minute when Lauren Allan’s shot was too hot for Courtney Newbon to handle, but it was too little too late for the Jets who slipped to just their second loss of the season.
Victory on the other hand have won 5 of their 8 matches this season and have given themselves a two point buffer over Canberra United, who play Central Coast Mariners tomorrow evening.
