Glory sign Nigeria international with UWCL experience tipped to make ‘major impression’ in Perth

Perth Glory have strengthened in defence with the signing of Nigerian international defender Onyinyechi Zogg ahead of the 2024-25 Liberty A-League season.

The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-season deal with the Western Australian club, and will arrive Down Under having garnered extensive experience in European club football throughout her career to date.

Born in Switzerland, Zogg has played for Swiss clubs Young Boys, FC Zürich, FC Bethlehem and Servette FC, and has represented clubs in France (ASJ Soyaux) and Germany (Turbine Potsdam).

Zogg made four appearances in the UEFA Women’s Champions League for FC Zürich from 2019-2020 and in 2021, made her international debut for Nigeria.

Described as a “technical and athletic defender” by Glory head coach Stephen Peters, Zogg says her arrival in the Liberty A-League has been a long time coming.

“Once my manager told me about the possibility of going to Perth Glory, I jumped at the opportunity,” she said.

“I have heard so much about the quality and level of the (league) and always wanted to experience it and now to be able to do this with Perth Glory is such a fantastic opportunity.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting my teammates and coach in person and to being an effective contributor to the club’s success.”

Zogg’s signature is the latest in a flurry of squad announcements by the club as Peters’ squad for his first season in charge of Glory begins to take shape.

The defender becomes the club’s seventh new signing alongside Gabby Hollar, Naomi Chinnama, Ella Abdul-Massih, Sarah O’Donoghue, Tijan McKenna and Ischia Brooking, while Jessika CowartSusan PhonsongkhamIzzy Foletta, Grace Johnston, Bella Wallhead, Mischa Anderson, Isobel Dalton and Georgia Cassidy have all been re-signed for the 2024-25 season.
