Glory dismiss Garcia with struggling Perth bottom of ALM

Perth Glory have dismissed head coach Richard Garcia with the struggling club bottom of the A-League Men table.

Glory parted with Garcia, who was appointed in September 2020, and assistant Steven McGarry amid a seven-match winless streak in the Isuzu UTE A-League – academy coach Ruben Zadkovich will take interim charge until the end of 2021-22.

Saturday’s 4-1 rout at home to fellow strugglers Brisbane Roar proved to be the final straw for Perth’s hierarchy, despite a challenging season which left the Glory displaced due to the strict border restrictions in Western Australia.

Perth returned to WA at the start of the month but they have only taken one point from their four consecutive home fixtures, losing three matches to be four points adrift at the foot of the table.

“I would like to sincerely thank Richard and Steven for the huge level of dedication that they have shown during their two years at the helm,” Glory Owner and Chairman Tony Sage said in a statement on Sunday.

“COVID-19 has had a huge impact upon the club on and off the field which cannot be over-stated and its legacy is still being felt.

“Ultimately, however, this is a results business and unfortunately, claiming one point from our last four home games is an unacceptable return.

“The difficult decision has therefore been made to part company with the Head Coach and his Assistant.

“Ruben and Chris have been handed the honour of taking the club forward until the end of the current campaign and further developing the crop of extremely promising young West Australian players who have progressed through the PGFC Academy into the First Team this year.

“Given their knowledge of these young players, coaching credentials and passion for the club, I am confident that Ruben and Chris will have an immediate positive impact upon the team’s performances and results.”
