Round 15 result
Wellington Phoenix:
5-1 win over Newcastle Jets (A)
Perth Glory:
Bye

Wellington Phoenix are the form side of the competition right now, having only lost once since their 7-0 dismantling of Sydney FC, and that came against league leaders Melbourne City.

Their 5-1 win in stormy conditions against Newcastle was a dominant display, with four goals inside the first 25 minutes. The first two from Pia Vlok, before Emma Pijnenburg and Ellie Walker grabbed one each. Vlok would complete her hat-trick on the way to making it five goals before lightning stopped play early in the Hunter.

The week got better for young Vlok, the 17-year-old earning her first ever call up to the New Zealand national team.

The bye came the right time for Perth Glory, their climb up the ladder had slowed somewhat with draws against Central Coast and Sydney and a loss to Melbourne City before their weekend off.

Perth Glory took a 1-0 win when these sides met in Round 7, Susan Phongsongkham with the 75th minute winner.

Western Sydney Wanderers v Adelaide United

Saturday, February 7 – CommBank Stadium – 4:50pm AEDT

Current table position
Western Sydney Wanderers:
10th
Adelaide United:
5th

Round 15 result
Western Sydney Wanderers:
3-2 win over Sydney FC (A), 1-0 win over Melbourne City (A)
Adelaide United:
2-1 win over Melbourne City (H)

After going almost a year with just one victory to their name, Western Sydney Wanderers now have three wins on the bounce and are off the bottom of the table.

The mid week victory against ladder leaders Melbourne City was a particularly impressive effort, scoring through an own goal and desperately holding on defensively.

Adelaide won against Melbourne City too this week, Englishwoman Fiona Worts scored her second goal for the season and defender Ella Tonkin scored her first.

A win for Western Sydney can bring them within a point of the top six, while a win for Adelaide can bring them level with Melbourne City.

These sides met in Round 9 just after Christmas, Adelaide took the win 5-2.

Melbourne Victory v Newcastle Jets

Saturday February 7 – John McEwan Reserve – 5:00pm AEDT

Melbourne Victory:
7th
Newcastle Jets:

Round 15 result
Melbourne Victory:
3-1 loss to Canberra United (A)
Newcastle Jets:
5-1 loss to Wellington Phoenix (H)

Melbourne Victory have been struggling of late, winless since Christmas and out of the top six. Their cause wasn’t helped when centre-back Claudia Bunge was sent off against Canberra, forcing them to play an hour with just 10 players.

In a bit of good news for the Victory, Bunge has had her red card overturned, meaning there is no suspension to serve and she will be available for this match.

Newcastle have had their share of defensive woes this season, having not kept a clean sheet since December 13 and conceding four goals inside 25 minutes against Wellington last weekend, the Victory will see this as an opportunity to pounce on.

The last time these sides met was Melbourne Victory’s last win, 3-1 in Newcastle.

Melbourne City v Brisbane Roar

Sunday February 8 – ctrl:cyber Pitch – 5:00pm AEDT

MATCH CENTRE | BUY TICKETS | HOW TO WATCH

Current table position
Melbourne City:
1st
Brisbane Roar: 2nd

Round 15 result
Melbourne City:
2-1 loss to Adelaide United (A), 1-0 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers (H)
Brisbane Roar: 2-2 draw against Central Coast Mariners (H), 3-1 win over Sydney FC (A)

Melbourne City had gone since February 2024 without losing two consecutive Ninja A-League matches. That streak came to an end this week with a loss away to Adelaide and a shock loss at home to bottom placed Western Sydney.

After building a seemingly comfortable lead at the top of the table with games in hand, all of a sudden City are under a bit of a threat from the chasing pack.

Currently at the front of said chasing pack is Brisbane Roar, just one point behind City. A win for Brisbane will see them leapfrog them into the lead.

The Roar will have to continue their fight for the title without defender Leia Varley, and forward Sharn Freier.

24-year-old Varley has joined Frauen-Bundesliga club 1.FC Nürnburg in a transfer deadline day move, while the club announced Freier sustained an ACL injury in their draw against Central Coast.

These sides have played each other once already this year, a 1-1 draw on the 20th of January.

Sydney FC v Canberra United

Sunday February 8 – Leichhardt Oval – 5:00pm AEDT

Current table position

Round 15 result
Sydney FC:
3-2 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers (H), 3-1 loss to Brisbane Roar (H)
Canberra United:
3-1 win over Melbourne Victory (H)

It’s been a torrid time of late for Sydney FC. Winless since November, they parted ways with their long-time coach Ante Jurić after their Sydney Derby loss and then lost to Brisbane in their midweek clash to cement them their spot at the bottom of the table.

The Sky Blues are running out of time to turn their season around, but getting minutes into their young charges could set them up well for the future.

17-year-old Amelia Cassar and 15-year-old Willa Pearson have become mainstays in the starting XI, while 18-year-olds Amber Luchtmeijer and Madeleine Caspers and 17-year-olds Rubi Sullivan and Skye Halmarick have been getting more regular appearances as the season’s gone on.

Canberra arrested their three match slide with a big win against Melbourne Victory, making the most of a player advantage to win 3-1. Canberra too have been getting good value from their young players, with 21-year-old Sasha Grove, 20-year-old Mary Stanić-Floody and 19 year-old Tegan Bertolissio all scoring against the Victory.
