Five of Katrina Gorry’s best Westfield W-League moments

Westfield Matildas midfielder and Brisbane Roar star Katrina Gorry is arguably one of the best players the Westfield W-League has ever produced.

And at just 26 years old, the former AFC Women’s Player of the Year and two-time Westfield W-League Premiership winner is still on the rise.

LOGARZO: ‘Westfield W-League getting bigger and better

One of the best strikers of the ball in the competition’s history, today we’re counting down some of our favourite Gorry moments on Australian shores.

Gorry seals first Premiership with Brisbane Roar in 2012/13

Gorry made her name as one of the Westfield W-League’s best emerging talents while at Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory.

But she began to take the competition by storm after returning to hometown club Brisbane Roar.

The Westfield W-League had rarely seen a tenacious young talent of Gorry’s ilk at the time, and ‘Mini’ soon made her competitive drive and penchant for a long-range strike known around the country.

One of her highlights included a late equaliser against Perth Glory in round eight – an 86th minute strike that would ultimate prove the difference in Brisbane edging Glory to the Premiers Plate weeks later.

Gorry treble downs Wanderers in 2013/14

The Westfield Matildas midfielder is near untouchable in full flight, and perhaps no other game demonstrated her ability to seize control of a match than her hat-trick against Western Sydney Wanderers in December 2013.

Roar entered half time at Marconi Stadium 1-0 down after a goal from Wanderers forward Catherine Cannuli, but what followed in the second stanza was Gorry at her sensational best.

Gorry dragged the Roar back into the game after winning and dispatching an early penalty before sealing the deal with two late goals in an emphatic comeback.

The performance lifted Roar to the top of the table and came a week after Gorry’s starring role in the Westfield Matildas 2-0 win over China.

Stunner against Canberra in 2014/15

Allowing Gorry time to weigh up a shot outside the box these days is a cardinal Westfield W-League sin.

Canberra United learned this the hard way back in November 2014. The two Westfield W-League heavyweights were locked at 1-1 following goals from Canberra’s Ashleigh Sykes and Roar’s Tameka Butt, before Gorry netted arguably one of the best goals in the competition’s history.

The diminutive midfielder unleashed an unstoppable dipping shot from 35 metres out that snuck underneath the crossbar and into the top right-hand corner to stun the Suncorp Stadium faithful.

One day later, Gorry flew to the Philippines for AFC Annual Awards and was crowned AFC Women’s Player of the Year.

Stunner against Adelaide in 2016/17

Gorry has rifled in her fair share from long distance but few strikes rival that stunning drive against Adelaide United in December 2016.

Four minutes into a home match against her former club, Gorry made her mark again.

Following a scrap inside the Adelaide penalty area, the ball spilt to Gorry who drove a first-time effort past Reds goalkeeper Eliza Campbell and into the top left corner.

She wasn’t done there – she also provided an assist for Tameka Butt’s goal minutes later and was crowned player of the match in Roar’s 3-2 win.

In a season Gorry observed as the competition’s best ever, the Roar midfielder continually evolved her game as Brisbane finished top of the regular season pile.

While it wasn’t her most productive season in front of goal, Gorry was still the heartbeat of the Roar midfield and one of the central reasons for the club’s Premiers Plate win.

And it was only fitting that the campaign commenced with a Gorry opening the account for the new season with a goal inside 20 seconds against Sydney FC.

Another highlight was Gorry’s match-winning performance in Roar’s 2-0 win over eventual Champions Melbourne City in December – a match that saw her score a decisive goal, in one of the season’s biggest fixtures.
