Ex-Victory youngster makes big J.League move

Former Melbourne Victory forward Pierce Waring has followed in Besart Berisha’s footsteps by completing a dream switch to J.League club Cerezo Osaka.

The move was confirmed on Wednesday night following lengthy speculation linking the 19-year-old with the Japanese Super Cup winners.

It comes less than a week after Victory favourite Berisha announced he had signed with league leaders Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

Waring, who holds a Japanese passport, served as an understudy to Berisha in Melbourne, eventually breaking through for his Hyundai A-League debut in Round 21 of last season.

The ex-Australia Under-17 international memorably scored in his first AFC Champions League start, netting the opener in a 2-1 win over Shanghai SIPG in April.

His new club Cerezo are currently fourth in Japan’s top tier and are the reigning holders of both the J.League Cup and the prestigious Emperor’s Cup.
