Who is the Isuzu UTE A-League signing of the season?

That is the question set to be answered via aleagues.com.au’s eToro Transfer Power Rankings in 2023-24, ranking the best performers of all the off-season signings every month.

Each player’s place in the eToro Transfer Power Rankings is based off their Opta Index score for the season – and the rankings will shift month to month based on performance until we can crown the signing of the season.

eToro Transfer Power Rankings – Top 10 (Overall)

10. Daniel Arzani

  • Ranking last month: N/A
  • Opta index: 68.0
  • Transfer: Macarthur FC -> Melbourne Victory

Melbourne Victory forward Daniel Arzani made his way into the top 10 of the eToro Transfer Power Rankings after registering one goal and two assists across four January fixtures.

Arzani now has two goals and four assists to his name through 14 appearances in his first season at Victory.

9. Lachlan Brook

  • Ranking last month: 10th (climbed one place)
  • Opta index: 68.0
  • Transfer: Brentford -> Western Sydney Wanderers

Lachlan Brook moved from 10th to ninth place on the eToro Transfer Power Rankings leaderboard after January.

The 22-year-old made five appearances for the Wanderers throughout the month, scoring a drought-breaking goal against Western United on the 27th, ending a 10-game wait for a goal in Wanderers colours.

8. Ryan Teague

  • Ranking last month: N/A
  • Opta index: 68.2
  • Transfer: FC Famalicao -> Melbourne Victory

Melbourne Victory midfielder Ryan Teague notched his first assist of the season in a 3-2 win over Perth Glory to kick off an unbeaten January in his new club’s colours.

Teague made four appearances for Victory in January, defeating Perth and drawing to Central Coast, Wellington and Sydney FC.

7. Terry Antonis

  • Ranking last month: N/A
  • Opta index: 69.0
  • Transfer: Free agent -> Melbourne City

With two world class strikes in January, it’s no surprise Melbourne City midfielder Terry Antonis leaped into the top 10 on the eToro Transfer Power Rankings.

Antonis scored against both Western United and Adelaide from long range – and the two stellar strikes proved match-winners on both occasions.

6. Steven Ugarkovic

  • Ranking last month: N/A
  • Opta index: 69.0
  • Transfer: Wellington Phoenix -> Melbourne City

Steven Ugarkovic scored his second goal in City colours in January as he made his way into the top 10 on the eToro Transfer Power Rankings for the first time this season.

Ugarkovic’s January strike came in a 2-1 loss to Central Coast; he made four appearances for City throughout the month – two defeats and two wins.

5. Aziz Behich

  • Ranking last month: 2nd (dropped two places)
  • Opta index: 72.2
  • Transfer: Dundee United -> Melbourne City

Aziz Behich sat second on the eToro Transfer Power Rankings at the end of December but 0dropped two places on the leaderboard after his departure to the AFC Asian Cup with the Socceroos.

Whilst on international duty, Behich signed on loan with Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, meaning his Opta Index value of 72.2 will not change between now and the season’s end.

4. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos

  • Ranking last month: 4th
  • Opta index: 74.1
  • Transfer: PAS Giannina -> Newcastle Jets

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos ranked fourth on the eToro Transfer Power Rankings after December and the Newcastle Jets striker retains his place after a terrific January.

The in-form spearhead bagged three goals in four games for the Jets throughout the month as he continued to close the gap on Golden Boot leader Bruno Fornaroli. A goal at the start of February took his overall tally to 11 for the season.

3. Ángel Torres

  • Ranking last month: 6th (climbed three places)
  • Opta index: 74.1
  • Transfer: Balzan FC -> Central Coast Mariners

Ángel Torres sat outside the top 10 for the opening 10 rounds of the season but has shot into consideration as the league’s best off-season signing after a sensational run of form.

Torres didn’t score in his first four games of the season but has bagged 10 goals and three assists in his following 10 appearances for the Mariners. He scored two of those goals in January in victories over Melbourne City and Brisbane Roar.

2. Josh Brillante

  • Ranking last month: 3rd (climbed one place)
  • Opta index: 75.4
  • Transfer: Melbourne Victory -> Western Sydney Wanderers

Josh Brillante led the count after October/November, then dropped to third after December. Now, the Wanderers midfielder jumps up one place into second in the eToro Transfer Power Rankings.

Brillante featured in three games for Western Sydney in January: a win over Melbourne City and two defeats against the Mariners and Perth.

1. Tolgay Arslan

  • Ranking last month: 1st
  • Opta index 77.8
  • Transfer: Udinese -> Melbourne City

Melbourne City star Tolgay Arslan keeps his place at the top of the eToro Power Rankings leaderboard – but is that set to change?

The mercurial midfielder has five goals and five assists to his name after 14 league appearances but is set to spend the next four games on the sidelines after a red card collected against Perth Glory on February 2.

The red card was issued after the final whistle of the 4-2 defeat with Football Australia’s independent Match Review Panel deeming Arslan had committed the offence of “Use of offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures against a Match Official”.

What is the Opta Index?

Opta defines it as follows: 

The Player Index is based on totals in a variety of statistics for each player. The index score uses subcomponents (such as shooting, passing, defending), corresponding to different qualitative aspects of a player’s performance.

These component scores are combined to create an overall rating for each player. The formula that works out the overall match rating have been developed by Opta’s own team of data scientists in conjunction with our award-winning Data Editorial team.
