Adelaide United have re-signed defender Ella Tonkin ahead of the 2024-25 Liberty A-League season.
Tonkin, who has been at the club since 2019, has penned a one-season extension at the Reds, with an option for a second year.
Honoured as the club’s Young Player of the Year in 2024, Tonkin says she’s delighted to continue her journey in Red, and has taken inspiration from a former Adelaide star who has become a household name with the CommBank Matildas.
“It’s an honour to continue my journey with Adelaide United,” Tonkin said.
“Growing up in Adelaide, it’s always been a dream to play for the Reds, and I’m grateful for the faith the club has shown in me.”
“One of my biggest inspirations has been Charli Grant; growing up playing with her in Adelaide and seeing what she has achieved in football inspires me to reach my full potential.”
Tonkin is Adelaide’s fourth re-signing of the off-season alongside Katie Bowler, Zoe Tolland, Meleri Mullan and Sarah Morgan.
The 21-year-old will feature in an Adelaide backline significantly strengthened by the return of CommBank Matildas centre-back Matilda McNamara.
Adelaide head of football Marius Zanin says Tonkin re-signing signifies the club’s commitment to retaining and fostering South Australian talent.
“We are delighted to have Ella continue with us,” said Zanin.
“She represents the kind of young South Australian talent we are committed to developing.
“Ella has shown tremendous growth during her time here, and we are dedicated to supporting her in achieving her goals, both on the pitch and in her academic pursuits. We believe in providing a platform for our players to succeed and thrive in all aspects of their lives.”
