Phoenix youngster backed to ‘come back stronger than ever’ after season-ending injury

Wellington Phoenix have confirmed a major injury setback for scholarship signing Ella McCann, who will miss the 2024-25 Liberty A-League season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee.

McCann suffered the season-ending injury on the eve of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

The New Zealand youth international signed a two-year scholarship deal with the Phoenix only last month but after the cruel injury blow, has been backed by Wellington head coach Paul Temple to come back a better player for the second year of her contract.

“I’m devastated for Ella,” Temple said. “It should be the most exciting time of her fledgling career.

“She’s just signed her maiden professional contract and should be testing herself against the best young footballers on the planet at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

“It’s cruel that this injury has happened now, but we’ll support Ella throughout her rehab and I’m sure she’ll come back stronger than ever in 2025.”
