On the eve of Saturday night’s clash against the Sky Blues, Wellington skipper Andrew Durante has compared this Sydney FC versus the Roar side of the Ange Postecoglou era.
Hyundai A-League preview: Phoenix v Sydney FC
Arnie’s Sydney FC of 2016/17 or Ange’s Brisbane dynasty?
The Sky Blues have swept all before them this season, drawing comparisons with the Roar side that won three Grand Finals in four seasons from 2010/11 to 2013/14.
If anyone is qualified to compare their relative merits, it’s Andrew Durante.
The Wellington Phoenix skipper has played more outfield games than any other Hyundai A-League player in the 12-year history of the competition.
“What Sydney has done is pretty impressive,” said Durante as his side completed preparations for the Sky Blues’ visit on Saturday night.
“Just 11 goals conceded is amazing in this league.
“They’re right up there,” he said.
BRISBANE BETTER WITH THE BALL?
Sydney FC can equal Brisbane’s record 65-point haul for a Hyundai A-League season if they beat Durante’s Nix in Wellington.
And they would reach that tally in four fewer games than Roar needed in 2010/11.
But that doesn’t necessarily put them ahead in Durante’s eyes.
“Brisbane were incredible over those two or three seasons,” he remembered.
“Sticking my neck out, that Brisbane team were probably a little bit more exciting back then.
“But in terms of structure, discipline and total game plans, Sydney FC have really nailed it this season.”
SKY BLUES SUPREME IN SPITE OF SALARY CAP
The Phoenix veteran sees Sydney FC’s stellar campaign as a positive for the entire Hyundai A-League.
“It’s great for the league that there’s a team that’s actually been able to break away and show dominance.
“Generally with the salary cap it’s always quite even, so credit to Sydney,” he said.
