You knew Sydney FC’s newest signing was going to make a splash on social media when it received the official ‘Here We Go’ treatment from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano as Australia slept, largely unaware of the major deal to greet them on Monday morning.
Douglas Costa was officially announced by the Sky Blues on a two-year deal, representing one of the biggest coups in the history of the Isuzu UTE A-League.

Online, fans were buzzing with the arrival of a player who has played for the likes of European giants Bayern Munich and Juventus, winning several trophies with both, and pulled on the famous shirt of Brazil a total of 31 times, including at a World Cup.
At time of writing, Romano’s initial tweet has been viewed 1.3 million times on X, garnering over 15,000 likes.
On Instagram, Sydney FC’s video confirming Costa’s signing has amassed over 420,000 views and 24,000 likes in the space of just over four hours.

Former Crystal Palace star Yannick Bolasie commented ‘What a player’, while ex-Arsenal full-back Andre Santos dropped a string of fire emojis.
Sydney FC legend Alex Brosque labelled it an ‘outrageous signing’ on Instagram stories, while A-Leagues icon Archie Thompson summed up the coup in just one word: ‘Wow’.
In the headline of their article on Costa’s signing, the Sydney Morning Herald labelled the signing of the ex-Bayern Munich and Juventus winger the ‘biggest since Del Piero’ in the Isuzu UTE A-League.
Indeed, its difficult to recall a higher profile arrival since that of Italian great Alessandro Del Piero, who also joined the Sky Blues, back in 2012.

Elsewhere on social media, plenty of personalities from around the league and Australian football weighed in on Costa making Sydney FC the seventh club of a career that has seen stints in Brazil, Ukraine, the USA, Italy and Germany.
“This is a great signing”, wrote Socceroos assistant coach and former Sydney FC player Luke Wilkshire. “Fantastic news for the competition,” added Craig Foster.
Players were pumped too, with Sky Blues forward Jaiden Kucharski writing on his Instagram story: “Welcome to Sydney. Keen to play with this legend” Meanwhile, Macarthur’s Ariath Piol commented “Shotgun asking for his shirt!”

Former NRL star Josh Mansour showed his excitement with a string of fire emojis.
Meanwhile on X, Network 10 and Paramount+ commentator Simon Hill wrote: “A statement signing by @SydneyFC to compensate for the loss of Robert Mak. They have a good track record with overseas attackers (Del Piero, Janko, Le Fondre, Bobo, Mak, Lolley) – let’s hope this one lives up to the hype…no doubting his pedigree.”
Central Coast Mariners legend turned pundit Daniel McBreen added: This would have to be the first true “Marquee” signing in a while. Big signing.”
“Big name, got game,” tweeted football presented Adam Peacock. “If he stays in shape, and helps foster some of the kids in Sydney’s squad, it’s a huge signing.”
