Melbourne Victory striker Danny Allsopp has this afternoon announced retirement form football, effective immediately.
Allsopp was instrumental in Victory’s two Hyundai A-League championships and won the competition-s Golden Boot award in 2006/07.
Allsopp made 118 A-League appearances in which he netted 42 goals, and has played more than over 400 professional games and returned more than 160 goals during his 17-year career.
“I-ve received amazing support over the years and there are so many people who have contributed to my career and I-d like to thank each and every one of them,” Allsopp said.
“I-m extremely proud of what I have achieved throughout my career and football has allowed me to play in leagues across four different continents, including the English Premier League, and those experiences will stay with me forever.
“There have been many highlights along the way, and obviously the great success we enjoyed will always stay with me, but I feel very proud to have been a part of such an exciting period for not only this club, but the A-League and our sport in Australia.”
“Now is the right time to move onto the next chapter of my life,” he added.
Melbourne Victory Coach, Ange Postecoglou paid tribute to the 34-year-old striker, saying his record speaks for itself.
“Danny has been a very loyal servant to this club and has enjoyed a fantastic career, so we certainly wish him well.”
“To do what he has done over such a long career is testament to his commitment and professionalism.”
Victory will honour Danny before the Round 5 clash with Wellington Phoenix at Etihad Stadium, giving fans the opportunity to farewell a club legend.
