Roar’s Joey breaks teammate’s all-time record just eight months later

Brisbane Roar youngster Jordan Courtney-Perkins usurped teammate Izaack Powell as the club’s youngest ever Hyundai A-League starter last Saturday.

At just 17 years and 17 days old, Courtney-Perkins became Brisbane’s latest teenage hot shot to make his mark in the Hyundai A-League, beating Powell’s previous club record by a week on his maiden Roar start against Wellington Phoenix.

Powell – plays alongside Courtney-Perkins for Australia’s U-17’s and featured together at the 2019 FIFA World Cup in Brazil last month – had previously etched his name into the club’s history books when he debuted against Sydney FC aged 17 years and 24 days in March.

Courtney-Perkins is also Brisbane’s youngest ever player across all competitions following his debut in the FFA Cup against Sydney FC back in August aged 16 years and 276 days.

The previous youngest ever players to debut in the Hyundai A-League for Roar were Rahmat Akbari (17 years, 193 days), Dane Ingham (17 years, 248 days) and Nick D’Agostino (17 years, 263 days).

And all-time, the Toowoomba Grammar School student is the 17th youngest player to make a Hyundai A-League debut.

Teeboy Kamara made his debut aged just 15 years and 211 days for Adelaide United against Gold Coast United in 2011.

Fast, but not quite fast enough

Kwame Yeboah gave Western Sydney Wanderers a flying start in last Friday’s defeat to Melbourne City by finding the net after just 1 minute and 20 seconds, which is the quickest goal scored in the Hyundai A-League this season.

But where does Yeboach’s quickfire strike rank among the quickest goals in the history of the competition?

Louis Brain is the man who holds the honour of scoring the Hyundai A-League’s fastest goal, having found the net after just 11 seconds in Adelaide United’s Round 3 clash with Melbourne Victory in 2005.

Brain’s record still stands fourteen years later, despite a few close calls.

Nicolas Martinez broke the deadlock against Perth Glory in 2016 after just 20 seconds, while Adelaide’s Marcelo Carrusca scored against Melbourne City with just 25 seconds on the clock.

And who could forget the efforts of David Williams and Ritchie de Laet during 2019? Williams (Wellington Phoenix) found the net against Newcastle Jets in March after a mere 29 seconds, while de Laet (Melbourne City) punished Wanderers with a strike on 31 seconds in January.

Experience counts for Perth and Sydney

Perth Glory and Sydney FC are two teams who have built their recent success upon a platform of experience

That was underlined in the 2019 Grand Final, which was at the time featured the second-oldest starting line up in Australian national league history (31.01).

That record was beaten when Perth travelled to Western United in October – but that new high of (31.2) did not last long.

Saturday’s Grand Final rematch saw the Sky Blues and Glory break the record again just months after the 2018/19 big dance, by sending 22 players with an average age of 31.7 years – the new oldest starting line up in Australian national league history, as confirmed by stats expert Andrew Howe.
