‘Major coup’ for Glory as Matildas keeper heads West for new challenge ‘out of my comfort zone’

Perth Glory have signed Matildas keeper and Ninja A-League great Casey Dumont on a one-year deal in a move that has significantly strengthened the club’s goalkeeping stocks.

The 32-year-old heads West after one season at Central Coast Mariners to link up with new Glory head coach Stephen Peters, who coached Dumont at NSW NPLW club Blacktown Spartans.

Dumont made her Ninja A-League debut in 2008 for Queensland Roar (now Brisbane Roar) and in the 16 years since, has played for Roar, Mariners, Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory; Dumont won two Ninja A-League Championships at Brisbane and a third at Victory, and won one Premiership at both clubs.

A Matildas debutant in 2015, Dumont was part of the Australian international squad that made history in 2010 by winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup title.

In recent years, Dumont has become a multi-sport athlete, spending the Ninja A-League off-season with AFLW club Hawthorn FC, where she’s currently partaking in her second-consecutive AFLW season.

After putting pen to paper on a one-season deal with Perth, the 2022 Ninja A-League Goalkeeper of the Year labeled her latest career venture as a step out of her comfort zone that aligns with her ambitions as a multi-sport athlete.

“I’m looking forward to a new challenge,” she said.

“It’s going to be out of my comfort zone being on the other side of Australia at a new club with a whole lot of new faces, but I love being out of my comfort zone and the challenges that come with this.

“I think Perth will help me grow as an athlete on the field and as a better person off the field.

“I’m looking forward to taking on a mentor role amongst the team, helping the younger players improve their growth mindsets and passing on some of my tips from all the experiences I have had in this league.

Dumont was named Player of the Match in Melbourne Victory’s 2022 Ninja A-League Grand Final triumph over Sydney FC.

“I worked under Stephen (Peters) a few years ago in the NSW NPLW with Blacktown Spartans and I enjoyed his playing style then and am looking forward to doing so again.

“I’ve seen all the growth and development Stephen has had since then and can’t wait to see him in charge and to be a part of that.

“I hope I can help Perth Glory challenge at the top of the table and grow the club’s women’s football department. We are planning to aim high and make those finals spots and I believe that’s doable, especially with the recruitment the club has carried out during this off-season.

“I appreciated how CEO Anthony Radich, Football Director Stan Lazaridis and Stephen (Peters) reached out to get me to the club and supported me as a dual athlete.

“I’m excited to get amongst the squad and the club once I have finished this season with Hawthorn FC.”

Dumont’s arrival in Perth is a pivotal piece of off-season business for head coach Peters after the departure of goalkeeping duo Morgan Aquino and Sally James; the veteran keeper will contend with youngsters Miranda Templeman and Jessica Skinner for the No.1 role in Glory’s goalkeeping union.

Peters, who is preparing for his first season as a head coach in the Ninja A-League, described Dumont as a major acquisition for the club.

“Casey’s track record speaks for itself and to secure the services of a player with her pedigree is a real coup for the club,” Stephens said.

“In addition to being a top-quality player, she will also provide leadership and help drive standards within the playing group.

“Along with the two other keepers we have brought in, she will form a very strong unit which I know will serve us extremely well this season.”
