Canberra and Jets share points as Matildas team-mates go head-to-head

Canberra United and Newcastle Jets played out a 0-0 draw in their Ninja A-League showdown.

Neither side could find the back of the net at McKellar Park, where CommBank Matildas team-mates – Canberra and A-Leagues legend Michelle Heyman and Newcastle star Tash Prior – went head-to-head on Sunday.

With the result, Canberra’s winless run extended to six matches as they sit 10th while 2023-24 Semi-Finalists the Jets are a point better off in eighth position.

It was an evenly contested opening half in the nation’s capital, where Canberra goalkeeper Sally James was at the top of her game to keep the score level.

A header from Newcastle’s Deven Jackson was destined for the back of the net in the ninth minute but James made a big save to keep it out.

Moments later, Prior came up big for the Jets as she got in the way of an attempt from Canberra’s Sofia Christopherson that might have been set to cause the goalkeeper some problems. Solid defending from the Newcastle player.

Maja Markovski nearly put Canberra ahead two minutes into the second half but Newcastle goalkeeper Tiahna Robertson produced a superb save to keep out the half-volley following a delightful team move that saw Heyman chest the ball down for her team-mate.

Heyman had a golden chance to put the home side ahead in the 68th minute after outmuscling Robertson in a tussle for the ball but with the goal at her mercy, the Australia international fluffed her shot.
