Canberra re-sign World Cup-bound New Zealand international: ‘Exactly what we’re looking for’

Canberra United forward Ruby Nathan has signed a new deal for the 2024-25 Liberty A-League season.

The talented 18-year-old joined Canberra for her debut A-Leagues campaign last season and made 21 appearances for the capital club.

It comes as the teenager prepares for next month’s FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia after being selected by New Zealand.

“I was first attracted to the club after meeting the coaching staff and talking through the style of play and the set up at Canberra United,” Nathan said.

“I am delighted to be re-signing for the club under Antoni (Jagarinec) and I am looking forward to getting back out there in the green shirt.

“I enjoyed my first season at the club and now I will be aiming to push on and take my game to the next level. The fans got right behind me every time I was on the field last season, and I am keen to be part of this great club once again.”

Nathan is the first player to re-sign with Canberra following the return of Sally James.

“I worked with Ruby closely during the 2023-24 A-League season and know the quality that she can bring to the team in terms of her attacking output, and her defensive efforts,” Head Jagarienc said.

“Ruby is a diligent professional, a hard-worker, and is eminently coachable.

“She always gives her best when taking the field and can play in a variety of positions across the frontline, exactly what we are looking for in terms of our fluid attacking approach.”
