Brisbane Roar head coach Alex Smith has re-signed to coach the Liberty A-League side in 2024-25.
Smith has extended his contract with the Roar after replacing Garrath McPherson before Round 5 last season.
The former Roar and Melbourne City assistant is focused on developing and producing the not only Queensland talent but the next generation of Matildas in Australia, having seen the emergence of Sharn Freier – who has gone on to make her international debut following a breakout season.
“It’s a new era for the women’s program,” Smith said.
“I am really looking forward to having a full pre-season to implement my principles from the beginning. My aim is to create a brand of football that is enjoyable to watch and effective on the ladder. My team will defend aggressively, control possession, and attack with purpose.
“Continuing to develop and produce the next generation of national team players is a clear directive from the club’s management and very important to me.
“We have made strategic signings to help us accomplish this goal, and I am really looking forward to working with this exciting young squad which I know our supporters will get behind.
“I would like to bring an excitement in the way that we play, which I hope our supporters will enjoy and get behind. I want to make our games in Brisbane a regular outing for all football fans. It’s a very long offseason, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Brisbane’s chief operating officer (COO) Zac Anderson added: “We are proud to be offering another up and coming Queensland coach in Alex an opportunity to lead the women’s program in season 24-25.
“Alex deserves this opportunity to lead a side that he has worked to re-shape, with a heavy focus on bringing through the next generation of Queensland talent.
“We believe at this time stability is important and that Alex has set strong foundations to continue working from.
“We’re looking forward to seeing our women’s squad take shape over the coming weeks and for the season to commence.”
