Signing news: Young gun Archbold commits to Jets

Newcastle Jets have extended the contract of young gun Blake Archbold for another A-League season.

The young defender, who has made a couple of appearances this season, will remain with his hometown club until the end of the 2021/22 season at least.

“I’m pretty stoked,” Archbold said on the Jets’ official website.

“It was an easy decision to make. This was my goal, to re-sign.

“The mix between younger players and older players is great. The older players are great mentors to me, as are Daniel McBreen and Craig Deans. I’ve known them both for a long time. It was a really easy decision to re-sign.”

Archbold’s career began with Cessnock United and after being promoted to the Hunter Valley Hawks under-11 representative side, he attracted the attention of Jets’ talent scouts.

It was at the age of 14, he first met Coach Deans.

So, it was only fitting he made his A-League debut under him this season.

“I was coaching the under 14 team when I first saw Blake,” Deans said.

“He had a good personality and even back then, it was clear he had the drive to be a professional footballer.

“He’s had his share of injuries along the way, but he’s shown he has the mental strength to get through three major injuries and come out the other side.

“He’s earned his opportunities through hard work.

“It’s a good reward for him and a sign of the Academy Pathway working.”

Jets Football Manager Joel Griffiths added; “He’s a great kid who has come through our system.

“He’s eager to get better, he can play multiple positions and there’s has plenty of up-side to his game.

“With the right development, he could prove to be a very valuable player for us in the coming years.”
