Socceroo signs long-term extension ahead of first season as City captain: ‘I couldn’t be happier’

Subway Socceroos full-back Aziz Behich has signed a two-year contract extension at Melbourne City set to run until the end of the 2026-27 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Already under contract for season 2024-25, Behich has committed for a further two seasons shortly after being named City captain for the upcoming campaign.

With more than 100 City appearances to his name, Behich will lead a City squad bolstered by fellow experienced veterans Andrew Nabbout and Mathew Leckie who have both signed extensions of their own before the 2024-25 campaign.

Behich, a 70-cap Socceroo, has been selected in Australia’s squad set to face Bahrain and Indonesia in upcoming 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifiers.

Following the international window, Behich will return to City to continue preparations for Round 1 of the new Isuzu UTE A-Leagues season, and a road trip to take on Newcastle Jets on October 19.

“I couldn’t be happier to extend my contract for another two seasons,” Behich said.

“Melbourne City is my home and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to repay the club’s faith in me.

“The hunger across the squad has been evident throughout pre-season and I’m excited to continue to work towards bringing more success to the club.”

City director of football Michael Petrillo expressed his delight at Behich’s commitment to the club for the next three seasons.

“Aziz is our captain, he’s a natural leader of this group and someone who is just as important on the pitch as he is off the pitch,” Petrillo said.

“We have a talented, yet young squad, so it’s pivotal to have someone of Aziz’s calibre, experience and leadership in the locker room to lead this team forward over the next three seasons.”
