Ninja A-League stars dominate Australia U23 squad picked for continental tournament

Twenty-three of Australia’s best young footballers have been selected in the Australia Under-23 squad set to take part in the AEAN Women’s Championship MSIG Serenity Cup in Vietnam this August.

The 23-player squad is made up entirely of players who competed in the Ninja A-League 2024-25 season, and is highlighted by Central Coast Mariners’ Championship-winning star Isabel Gomez, who became a senior CommBank Matilda on debut against Argentina in June.

Gomez is joined in the squad by fellow capped Matildas Bryleeh Henry and Chloe Lincoln.

Drawn in Group B of the eight-team tournament, Australia will face Myanmar, the Phillipines and Timor-Leste between August 7 and 13, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals.

Australia Under-23 head coach Joe Palatsides says the strong squad is well-equipped to go deep in the tournament.

“It gives them a real taste of what it takes to compete at this international level while coming up against quality opposition in unfamiliar conditions and doing it within a structure that mirrors the expectations of the CommBank Matildas.

“Some of these players have already had a taste of senior football while others are knocking on the door, but no matter where they are on their journey, this kind of experience is incredibly valuable.

“Development is a big part of what we’re doing but we’re also going to Vietnam to win. We want our players to embrace the challenge, rise to the occasion, and understand what it means to wear the Australian jersey.”
