There will be a new winner crowned at the conclusion of the 2023 Australia Cup, after Campbelltown City SC knocked out reigning champions Macarthur FC with a stunning 2-1 win on Monday night.
The club from NPL South Australia took a 2-0 lead against the Bulls through Shogo Yoshikawa and Antoni Trimboli, and the two-goal buffer proved invaluable as Lachlan Rose’s stoppage-time strike proved nothing more than a consolation for the Isuzu UTE A-League club.
Campbelltown join fellow South Australian side MetroStars in the last 16 after the latter’s 5-0 win over Inglewood United in the Round of 32.
The Round of 16 draw followed three Monday-night games that saw Campbelltown City progress along with Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United. Brisbane edged Newcastle Jets in a 3-2 thriller after 30 minutes of additional time, while the Reds trumped Northcote City FC by two goals to nil.
A minimum of two A-Leagues clubs will be eliminated in the Round of 16, with Western Sydney Wanderers taking on Adelaide United and Melbourne City hosting Wellington Phoenix. Western United, meanwhile, will take on Gold Coast Knights as Sydney United 58 face Brisbane Roar and APIA Leichhardt host Sydney FC.
