Aussie ex-Westfield W-League coach guides Arsenal to major English trophy

Ex-Melbourne City Westfield W-League coach Joe Montemurro has won his first piece of silverware as coach of leading English women’s side Arsenal.

The Aussie coach, who took the reins of the Lady Gunners late last year, has guided the club to the FA Women’s Super League Continental Cup after a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the final overnight.

Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema scored the only goal of the game nine minutes before the break.

“Winning the competition means a lot to me but we have to make it habit again,” Montemurro, 48, told Arsenal.com

“It’s hopefully one of many going forward. I just applaud the players because they’ve worked so hard ever since I came in and they’re starting to believe again.

“We just want to get better and better.”

Montemurro’s success with Arsenal follows on from his incredible campaign with Melbourne City in their inaugural season, when he guided the club to the title without losing a game.
