Auckland FC have appointed Japanese star Hiroki Sakai as their inaugural captain heading into the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
Sakai will wear the captain’s armband as A-Leagues debutants Auckland prepare for their historic first ever competitive fixture against Brisbane Roar at Go Media Stadium on Saturday.
The 34-year-old Japan icon – who arrived from J1 League powerhouse Urawa Red Diamonds – offers a wealth of experience, having featured at three FIFA Men’s World Cup and a pair of Olympics while he played for the likes of Marseille in France and Hannover in the German Bundesliga.

Jake Brimmer – the 2021-22 Johnny Warren Medallist – and Tommy Smith have been named vice-captains.
