A-Leagues wonderkid signs four-year deal with Adelaide United

Adelaide United have signed 19-year-old striker Archie Goodwin from Newcastle Jets on a four-year deal set to last until the end of the 2027-28 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Goodwin made 44 league appearances for the Jets after making his debut in 2021 as the youngest player in club history, at 16 years and 106 days.

His development in the four seasons that followed has been impacted by a string of serious injuries; Goodwin has been cautiously managed by the Jets, with 38 of his 44 league appearances to date coming off the bench.

Goodwin scored seven goals through his 44 league league games in Newcastle.

“I’m really excited to meet all the staff, players and fans,” Goodwin said upon his confirmation as an Adelaide United player.

“The club has provided great opportunities to young players, and I believe Adelaide United is the place to get the best out of me.

“I am looking forward to banging in goals in front of the Red Army and lighting up Coopers Stadium.”

Adelaide head coach Carl Veart is now faced with an important challenge: to help the Young Socceroo stay fit and healthy and build on the 2023-24 season where he made the most appearances (20) he’s ever managed in a single campaign.

“I have kept close tabs on him since he debuted for Newcastle Jets and I always believed he was going to play at the highest level,” Veart said.

Adelaide United director of football Marius Zanin added: ‘We have been monitoring Archie for a while and we are excited to see what he will offer us.

“Archie is a hardworking, likeable player and person, one that will fit right into our system and philosophy.

“He has shown a lot of potential, and we can’t wait to see him develop here with us.”
