Wanderers re-sign homegrown teenager ‘well on her way to becoming a force to be reckoned with’

Western Sydney Wanderers have signed teenage attacker Amelia Cassar on a one-season scholarship deal.

The 16-year-old is yet to debut for the red and black but is back for her second Ninja A-League Women campaign at the Wanderers.

Cassar was named in the training camp for the CommBank Junior Matildas in the lead-up to the AFC Under-17 Women’s Asian Cup this year, and caught attention when she was named Under-16 Player of the Tournament for the NSW Metro team that went undefeated through the 2024 National Youth Championship Girls’ Tournament.

Cassar is a Western Sydney local and a long-time Wanderers fan with immense pride in re-signing for her hometown club.

“I am from Western Sydney, so ever since I started playing football, Western Sydney Wanderers has been the club I followed, so it is really special to actually represent the club that I have supported and followed,” Cassar said.

“The senior players having high expectations was great for me, because they expect a lot from you, so if you make a mistake, they will tell you how it is and when you need to step it up.

“I think that is really important because it is constructive, and something you can always reflect on and improve with.”

Cassar is the sixth player to re-sign with the Wanderers ahead of the 2024-25 Ninja A-League Women season, joining Sophie Harding, Gemma Ferris, Ella Buchanan, Amy HarrisonTalia Younis in recommitting to the club.

Wanderers head coach Robbie Hooker says the teenage attacker has all the attributes to become a Ninja A-League Women star.

“We have always known that Western Sydney is a hot bed for young talent, and Amelia is a shining example of that,” he said.

“At such a young age, she has already shown a technical proficiency greater than many existing players in the league and is well on her way to become a force to be reckoned with.

“The development of players like Amelia is a foundational pillar of what we are hoping to achieve over the coming years at Western Sydney Wanderers.”
