Smith was nominated for the January award via Football Coaches Australia’s monthly nomination process.
Australian Professional Leagues (APL) partnered with FCA in 2022-23 to help provide the recognition required for outstanding coaching performances across both the Ninja A-League and Isuzu UTE A-League.
The FCA assembled an experienced panel that decides the monthly nominees and then subsequent winners for Coach of the Month in both leagues.
The January eligibility period included Rounds 11-15 of the Ninja A-League season, with games between January 5 and February 1 considered by the FCA Panel when voting for the Coach of the Month nominees.
As such, Smith guided his side to wins over Canberra United and Melbourne Victory whilst securing draws against Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne City, Western Sydney Wanderers and Wellington Phoenix.
