Canberra seal deal for versatile midfielder tipped to make ‘big impact’ for new-look side

Canberra United have continued their recent signing spree, securing the services of midfielder Emma Robers for the upcoming Ninja A-League season.

Having recently left Western United after two seasons in Victoria, Robers makes the switch to McKellar Park after a 2023-24 campaign which saw her feature 16 times for her former side.

In total, Robers made 35 appearances for Western United having joined them for their inaugural campaign back in 2022-23, with Canberra head coach Antoni Jagarinec delighted to have secured a player of Robers’ calibre.

“We are excited to welcome Emma to the Canberra United family and are sure she will make a big impact on the group,” said Jagarinec after the deal was made official.

“Emma is a versatile player who has a fantastic dynamism to her game. Her profile fits exactly what we are looking for in a player this season, and her A-League experience will be an important part of our squad for the new campaign.”

The addition of Robers marks Canberra’s eighth foray into the market this off-season as new head coach Jagarinec continues to build out his squad ahead of the new campaign.

“I am thrilled to be signing for Canberra United and am looking forward to playing my part in the club’s 2024/25 season,” said Robers.

“Canberra is a wonderful city, and the club is top-class and has proven to be a successful team to play for in helping players fulfil their potential.

“I am excited about the prospect of lining up in the colours at McKellar Park and helping the team to be successful during the new season. I can’t wait to link up with the group and get out on the pitch.

“I have been lucky enough to make finals in each of my five A-League campaigns so far, and I hope to continue that run with Canberra.”

The 2023-24 season ultimately ended in disappointment for Canberra United as the club finished second-bottom of the ladder.

However spirits are high in the nation’s capital ahead of the new campaign with a new head coach steering the team and, crucially, veteran forward Michelle Heyman back on the books for season 2024-25.

Despite having come close to a move to English Women’s Super League side West Ham United in the off-season, A-Leagues great Heyman has signed on for the upcoming season having enjoyed a stellar campaign in front of goal which saw her snare the Golden Boot in 2023-24.
