Melbourne City go further ahead as McNamara scores two

Matildas striker Holly McNamara grabbed a brace as Melbourne City defeated Perth Glory 2-0 at Sam Kerr Football Centre.

Holly McNamara re-established her lead at the top of the golden boot race in the 20th minute, with a clever run to get on the end of Danielle Turner’s long clearance before she neatly chipped the ball over Perth keeper Teresa Morrissey.

The physical intensity went up a notch after the goal with both sides committing to their challenges, but it didn’t change the score from being 1-0 at half time.

City extended their lead in the 71st minute when Bryleeh Henry’s cutback from the right found Holly McNamara on the edge of the penalty area, the golden boot leader’s low finish just crept inside the post to make it 2-0.

Perth nearly answered straight back through Onyinyechi Zogg, her long range shot taking a deflection off the boot and dipping violently onto the crossbar and out of play..

With the sting well and truly taken out of the match, City were able to coast home with the score staying at 2-0.

Perth now turn their attention to their midweek match against Sydney FC, while Melbourne City head to South Australia on Friday to take on Adelaide United.
