Defending the far post at a rare Wanderers corner, Talia Younis’ in-swinging delivery beat everyone and bounced off the unsuspecting Aideen Keane and into the back of the net to give the Wanderers a shock lead.
City boss Michael Matricciani had seen enough at the break and introduced both Leticia McKenna and Golden Boot leader Holly McNamara in search of the equaliser.
Looking to up the ante, captain Rebekah Stott lashed a long range effort towards goal in the 49th minute which flew narrowly over Wanderers’ keeper Sham Khamis’ goal.
Deven Jackson went close to dragging her side level in the 74th minute as she curled a right-footed effort narrowly wide of the far post.
McNamara then forced Khamis into another save in the 84th minute as she fizzed a low effort straight at the keeper.
The result ensures the Wanderers have moved up into 10th on the ladder and clear of rivals Sydney FC after winning their third-straight match.
As for Melbourne City, Matricciani’s side remain on top of the ladder but have now lost consecutive matches in the Ninja A-League.
